CVCD EXCELLENCE AWARDS CALL FOR APPLICATIONS 2016

The Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Directors (CVCD) introduced in 2006 a scheme of awards called “CVCD Excellence Awards” to be awarded once in two years to recognize, appreciate and honor the outstanding contributions and accomplishments in research, innovation and invention by the staff in the University system. So far the CVCD Excellence Awards were made in 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2014 and applications are now called for CVCD Awards 2016. (see www.cvcd.lk for further details and updates).

Awards Categories
Three categories of awards have been decided by the CVCD.

  1. The Most Outstanding Senior Researcher
  1. The Most Outstanding Young Researcher (< 40 years of age on the closing date of applications)
  1. The Most Outstanding Inventor

For the first two categories, The Most Outstanding Senior Researcher and The Most Outstanding Young Researcher awards are offered in the following six fields of study.

  1. Health Sciences including Medicine, Dental Science, Veterinary Science and other Allied Health Sciences
  2. Technology and related Sciences including Engineering, Architecture, Quantity Surveying and Information Technology
  3. Biological Sciences including Agriculture and Allied Sciences
  4. Physical Sciences
  5. Social Sciences including Humanities and Aesthetics
  6. Management and Law

General Guidelines for Applications/Nominations

The general guidelines and instructions for applications and/or nominations for the CVCD Excellence Awards are as follows.

  1. Applicant/Nominee can apply/be nominated for one or more awards.
  2. Achievements and contributions during the University career up to the closing date can be included in the application. The application/nomination should contain the self-assessment done according to the Format for Self Assessment.All claims should be supported by documentary evidence. No marks shall be given in instances where documentary proof is not submitted.
  3. For publications, marks will be awarded as follows:
    1. Single-authored papers, the author will receive 100% of the marks awarded for the paper.
    2. Publications with one additional author will receive 60% of the marks for the first author and 40% marks for the second author.
    3. Publications by more than two authors will receive 40% for the first author and equal balance share for other authors.
  4. When marks for a publication in an indexed journal are claimed, the citation index in which the journal is indexed should be indicated.
  5. The applicant/nominee should sign the applications stating the following:
    “I declare that the information and particulars furnished above are true and accurate to the best of my knowledge and belief”.
  6. The applications/nominations should be prepared according to the general guidelines and criteria, and forwarded with the self-assessment, under registered cover to the Chairman/CVCD, Vice-Chancellor’s Office, Wayamba University of Sri Lanka, Lionel Jayathilake Mawatha, Kanadulla, Kuliyapitiya. The award applied for should be indicated on the top left-hand corner of the envelope.
  7. All applications/nominations should be forwarded through the official channels (i.e. through the Head of Department, Dean of the Faculty and the Vice-Chancellor).
  8. Applications/nominations received after the closing date shall not be entertained.
  9. High-profile Panels of Judges appointed by the CVCD, comprising past Vice-Chancellors, Emeritus Professors, Senior Professors, Professors and/or eminent personnel will evaluate the applications/ nominations and submit their recommendations to the CVCD.
  10. Final selection of the awards will be made by the CVCD,based on the recommendations of the Panels of Judges.  The CVCD may decide not to offer certain awards if the applicants have not reached requisite standards.
  11.  A minimum of 100 marks is required for The Most Outstanding Senior Researcher Awards while a minimum of 60 marks is required for The Most Outstanding Young Researcher Awards. The applicant/nominee with highest marks will be considered for the Most Outstanding Inventor Award.
  12. The decision of the CVCD shall be final.

*At least 30 points from a(i) and a(iii)  Publications in refereed indexed Journals for Most Outstanding Senior Researcher and 10 points from a(i) and a(iii) for Most Outstanding Young Researcher are required to qualify.

**With regard to poems, songs etc. lyric and music composed and dances, plays, films etc. produced, reviews or appreciations by authoritative persons should be attached in respect of each item.  With regard to a creative product or service in science or allied field, a brief description on the creative nature of the item should be submitted along with documentary proof.

***It should be stated whether served as the principal supervisor or as a co-supervisor.  The principal supervisor is given full marks while the co-supervisor gets 50%.

****Marks will be the same whether it is single ownership or joint ownership.

2. The Most Outstanding Young Researcher

* A brief description should be given on the number of machines/ implements/ instruments/ assembled /produced and sold, quantity of product produced and marketed, software developed and sold, type of biological or chemical process invented, and the impact on any particular sector, industry or community and contribution to  regional/national development.
