About us

The Committee of Vice Chancellors and Directors (CVCD) was established in 1979 under Section 124 of the Universities Act No 16 of 1978 as an advisory board to the University Grants Commission (UGC) under the leadership of Prof. Stanley Wijesundera, Vice Chancellor of University Colombo.

The primary role

The primary role of the CVCD is to serve as an Inter-University organization who acts as a moderator for the university and an advisor to the UGC, often shedding light on the difficulties faced by the state Universities in the country.

Currently the CVCD consists

of 19-member Universities and 4 Campuses under the UGC and Ministry of Higher Education. The members of the CVCD join together once month at the various member universities to discuss the latest updates within the universities, their issues and their best practices.
From the time of its inception, the CVCD has strived hard create union between universities so that they are united together when facing challenges thrown their way. In this long successive journey, the CVCD has gained many milestones that have benefited the state universities and the Higher Education of the country

It pays special attention to matters of Policy and administration while working hard to achieve the National Higher Education goals of the country.

It also represents the country’s Higher Education sector

Held the position of Chairman of the ACU

at the international associations such as the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU). The initial Chairman of the CVCD, Prof. Stanly Wijesundera and a former Chairman, R.A.L.H, Gunawardene have held the position of Chairman of the ACU. Thereby it is evident that the CVCD Sri Lanka holds an important place locally as well as internationally.
